Apartment Decorating Ideas For Couples

What is the image that comes to mind when you think of your first couples apartment? We're willing to bet that, for most people, it was a tiny rented place, but one you grew to love and appreciate. A young couples apartment is usually small, but the design ideas featured in this article prove that it doesn't have to be cramped, cluttered, or lack in the style department. Check out some wonderful interior design ideas for your living room, bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen, collected from the apartments of young people in love all around the world.

Living Room Design Ideas

1. Breezy in Barcelona

young couples apartment living-room-barcelona

This fresh, airy, luminous living-and-dining-room comes from a cleverly arranged small apartment in Barcelona we found on FresHome. It basically abides by all the design rules that a small couples apartment should uphold. The color scheme is light and breezy, and the open shelf allows the inhabitants to enjoy the outside view. Apart from that, the décor is eclectic enough to suit the diverse tastes of a young couple on the go.

2. Colorful Hipster Living Room in Puerto Rico

We actually found this loft living room as a real estate listing on Espacios Realty Network, and were mesmerized by the playful way in which it employs color and décor elements. The main furniture is in somber and neutral tones. However, the rest all pops with color and visual treats. We especially like the clever storage solution for the two bikes in this couples apartment, the open shelves in the dining room area, and the retro-looking dining chairs. Bonus: a patch of 'grass' delineates the dining table space, making every meal feel like a picnic.

3. Urban Industrial in Barcelona

When you're young and renting (or buying) your first couples apartment, chances are you're going to end up in an urban environment. This doesn't mean that your existence needs to be dull and dreary, though. Actually, as the above living room (which is the same one at the top of this list) proves, the simple, urban, industrial style can make for wonderful day areas. Eclectic decorative elements mix with functional design staples, such as the blinds, the retro armchair, and the floor lamp. The end result is as cozy and inviting as it is unpretentious and functional.

4. Work and Play in Madrid

You can always trust the Spanish to make any room look young, no matter how small the home, or how limited the budget. Proof of this is this workspace corner of a tiny, yet colorful couples apartment in Madrid. A lot of attention to detail went into the design of this particular corner of the living room, to ensure the eclectic blend of the design elements goes together. On the one hand, the apparent brickwork lends the room a post-industrial, modern vibe. On the other, though, the traditional rug and stool add a touch of quaint charm to the space.

5. Patterned Colors in Sicily

colorful living room

This vibrant living room in Lipari, Sicily is proof that you can never have enough color in your home. The patterned, colorful decorative pillows are the statement pieces of this living room design, but the painting on the wall, which is also patterned, and the decorative items on the coffee table complete the eclectic look. The color in this living room is tempered by the white couches, providing the perfect balance.

Bedroom Design Ideas

6. Creamy Comforts in Russia

This lush, yet breezy bedroom actually belongs to a couples apartment designed by talented Russian designer, Sergey Baskakov. The light and simple color scheme works like a charm with the very low bed. This is actually an ingenious sofa, extended to accommodate two occupants. We also like how the bed is placed directly underneath the window, so it can bask in the glorious morning sunlight, for a cozy awakening. The contemporary painting of an elegant woman adds just the dash of color to this otherwise neutral room.

7. Light in a Scandinavian-Style Bedroom

Small, simple, and Scandinavian-looking, this tiny, yet cozy bedroom makes great use of modern lighting elements. On the one hand, there's a desk lamp-like fixture on each side of the bed. This is for those lazy evenings spent curled up with your favorite novel. On the other, the romantic chandelier that hangs above the bed reminds you that each night can be special. To boot, the window lets the light of the sunshine in each morning, as if to make sure you wake up to yet another beautiful day every day.

8. Smart Storage in France

Espace Loggia is a French furniture design company that offers innovative bed designs – such as this beautiful, elegant, and highly functional loft bed, specially designed for couples. Aside from the king-sized bed above, the set also includes stairs fitted with drawers for storage. It also has a sofa with drawers beneath it, in which you can store everything you need. The loft bed is a perfect solution for couples living in one-bedroom apartments or studios, especially for homes with very tall ceilings.

9. Romantic Times in NYC

Some might scoff and deem this bedroom setup as 'too girly', but we're thinking it's entirely appropriate for most young couples out there. The color scheme is as simple as it is effective. It's white and dark brown, with dashes of red, meant to remind you how sweet life together can be. The truly magical design element is the canopy, with the overhanging garlands of LED lights. You don't need to be out in nature to enjoy the sight of a starry sky, do you? You can also enjoy it from one of these studio apartments for couples.

10. Artsy Comfort in Connecticut

If you and your partner are both art lovers, you might want to decorate your bedroom in a way that reminds you of your passion for art. In the case of this Connecticut apartment found on Elle Decor, the walls are not the only ones beaming with art. The bedding, headboard, and curtains are also art pieces by themselves. If you truly want to make a statement with your bedroom, this is definitely the way to go. Bonus: the vibrant green color of the walls!

Kitchen Design Ideas

11. Blackboard Inspiration in Russia

When you're young and in love, everything is a source of inspiration – and, as this creative kitchen from Int2 Architecture goes to show, your kitchen can inspire you, too. This open kitchen was designed with a small home in mind, and it's fresh enough to belong in an urban young couples apartment. We particularly like the bright color scheme, the apparent brickwork on the walls, and the use of typography. We obviously love the blackboard covered wall section, which can become a canvas for all your projects, designs, and ideas.

12. Earthy and Minimalistic in Russia

This sleek, contemporary kitchen belongs to a hip couples apartment designed by ART-UGOL. You wouldn't guess just how small this entire home is by looking at the pictures. That's because the designers gave it impressive stylistic coherence, by solely employing a white, black, and gray color palette. These hues are complemented by luminous tones of mixed wood. The open-plan kitchen is fully functional. It includes all the appliances a young couple would need to turn every meal into a feast.

13. Small & Cool in Tel Aviv

This kitchen encapsulates the look of the entire home in which it's located. It sits inside a small apartment in Tel Aviv featured in Apartment Therapy. The overall look of the design is clean and contemporary. However, there's plenty of retro chic details on each shelf, and in every nook and cranny. The challenge of designing this home lay in the fact that it actually is a young couples apartment. The two residents work from home, as graphic designers. They wanted to give each other plenty of separate space, but also take advantage of the open floor plan to spend quality time together.

14. Tiny & Cozy in Madrid

Think your kitchen is small? Then look at this "miniature" kitchen, located inside a small apartment in the Malasaña neighborhood of Madrid, featured in Apartment Therapy. The home belongs to a young couple who moved there from LA. They were faced with the challenge of barely having a kitchen to speak of. However, this didn't prevent them from designing a charming space to enjoy together. To boot, it also taught them discipline and thriftiness, since the kitchen only fits a tiny freezer and countertop oven.

15. Pastel Dream in Los Angeles

mint green kitchen

Justina Blakeney's LA kitchen is the stuff of fairytales for sure. Modern fairytales, that is. Featured in House Beautiful, her cottage not only makes the most of the space available, but also manages to put together a lovely kitchen/dining room area. The centerpiece of this kitchen is the counter, which is a space that separates the kitchen from the dining area, but it can also be a dining area in itself. Of course, the pastel mint color used in the kitchen only enhances the modern, chic look of the cottage.

Bathroom Design Ideas

16. Mixed Tiles in Brazil

Funky patterns and bold colors should feel right at home in any young couple apartment. This layout goes to show that sometimes, color and pattern coordination is overrated, at least where bathroom tiles are concerned. The crazy mix of tiles on the wall is beautifully offset by the square recessed sink and the wooden counter.

17. Four Across in Russia

That spells 'love'! This funky set of bathroom tiles featured in Int2 Architecture is suitable both for a kids' bathroom, as well as for the funky bathroom of a young couples apartment. It's cute enough to work in any style of décor. Also, it's bound to keep you inspired and entertained during your morning routine over the sink, as well as during a prolonged, relaxed bath. For a touch of color, employ a carpet with shades of yellow.

18. Marbled Luxury in Argentina

There's more than just a whiff of luxury in this sleek bathroom found on Dikidu, with its tones of beige and brown, offset by the sight of the bright red storage unit in the hallway. The floating cabinet and counter are minimalistic and edgy, while the round mirror and circular sink add a touch of femininity to this otherwise imposing space. Metal is also a notable presence in this bathroom, both in the chrome finishes of the faucets, but also via the décor elements on the counter. Talk about a couples apartment!

19. Dreamy Bathtub in Long Island

metal bathtub next to vintage rug and chair

If combining modern and traditional bathroom décor doesn't bother you, you're going to love this bathroom design idea featured in Architectural Digest. The bathtub has a modern feel, due to the material that it's made of, and the fact that it is not connected to the wall, as most traditional bathtubs are. On the other hand, the rug, chair, and small table, as well as the curtains and painting on the wall, are more traditional, but somehow fit the entire décor perfectly.

20. Penthouse Style in London

bathtub next to two heaters and a table

While this bathroom we found on Architectural Digest is part of a London penthouse, that doesn't mean you have to own a penthouse to get inspired by it. We love the use of space here, with the bathtub placed between two heaters, for those cold winter days, and the small table that is both useful and beautiful. The framed picture and the rubber ducks top it all off, giving the bathroom a homely, warm feel.

Final Thoughts

Young couples apartment designs don't have to be expensive to be memorable.
